MyJar Review

Halifax is a well-known bank in the United Kingdom, offering a multitude of services to their customers such as credit cards, banking facilities, mortgages and loans.

They don’t really offer short term payday loans, their loans are more suited to longer borrowing, ideal for those larger things you may require such as a car or home improvements.

Halifax History

Halifax was founded in 1853 as a building society and is named after the town of Halifax, which is located in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

By 1913, Halifax had developed into the largest building society in the UK, which was surprising considering the size of Halifax town.

It is said that the location of the town helped the growth of the company greatly due to the town being isolated and surrounded by hills to the south.

Halifax itself is a historical town with an interesting background. The Norman lords and William I set a law here called Gibbet Law which meant that some could be beheaded for being in the grounds of their manor.

Over the years the law was continued and eventually passed into the town where people were also beheaded if they were caught stealing goods for as little as 13.5 old pence, which is the same value as 5 pence today!

It took many lives of beggars and villains who were just trying to survive through the tough times. From it came this riddle from Halifax: “From Hell, Hull and Halifax, good Lord deliver us”

The lands in Halifax were not fertile enough to grow good corn, so were used for sheep farming. From this Halifax became one of the biggest producers of cloth and wool.

By the late 1850’s, there were over 24 mills in Halifax alone powered by water and then steam. One of the mills in Halifax was John Crossleys, which soon became the worlds largest carpet factory!

How the company works:

Halifax works similar to most other banks in the United Kingdom. They offer a range of different services, which you can apply for either online, by telephone or by visiting them in the branch.

Once you have applied for your loan, you should receive a decision almost instantly depending on your credit score. When you receive your payment greatly depends on whether you already bank with Halifax or not.

Repayment method:

Repayment is done by monthly direct debit. When you finalise your application you will be able to select a payment date that is suitable for yourself.

Your first payment will be made within 1 month of receiving your loan. If the date you select is within 9 days of receiving your money then the payment will be made the following month.

Do I need a bank account?

Yes, you will need to hold either a UK current account or have a building society account to be able to apply for a loan with Halifax. If you open a Halifax account your loan process will be faster.

To be eligible to apply for a loan you must fit the following criteria:

Age

All applicants must be at least 18 years and over if they wish to apply.

Address information

Halifax will require your address information for over the past 3 years during your application.

ID and Income

You will be required to provide photographic identification at one of the Halifax branches, if you are not already a Halifax customer.

Information about your current monthly income and all of your monthly outgoings will also be required.

This is so that Halifax can assess whether you can afford the loan repayments, ensuring you won’t be getting yourself into any financial difficulties.

Penalties

Halifax does not take missing payment lightly. They don’t allow you to ‘catch up’ the following month. If you miss a payment then your account will be transferred to debt collectors and a fee of £25 will be added. Details of the missed payment will be registered with the credit reference agency and it could affect your credit score, meaning you won’t be able to apply for any more credit.

If you find yourself in any difficulty then do contact them as soon as possible to discuss your options.

Reviews

Sadly even as one of the UK’s oldest business societies, Halifax doesn’t seem to have one of the greatest reputations on Trustpilot.

Their Trust pilot star rating is only 1 and a half. 81% of their reviews are rated as bad with only 12% of them being good.

Most of the customers are complaining about numerous different things but the main issue being customer service, both inside the bank branches and over the telephone.

Halifax haven’t replied to any of their customer’s reviews either to offer any solution or condolences for the inconvenience that has been caused.

Out of the 12% of the reviews that were good, it would seem these people have been a Halifax customer for years and have never had any issues with them at all.

However, sadly the negative reviews far outweigh the good.
