    HSBC Review

HSBC is one of the largest banks, not only in the UK but also worldwide! They currently cover over 65 countries including the following territories: Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, North America and Latin America.

They offer longer-term loans, which are payable over a minimum of 1 year or more starting from £1000.

You do not need to be a customer of the bank to be able to apply for a loan with them, although if you are a customer you will receive greater benefits.

    History:

Although the history and previous information of the bank isn’t listed on Companies House, they actually go back all the way to the 1800s

In 1836, a man called Charles Geach established and opened “The Birmingham and Midland Bank” in the city of Birmingham, which is where it all started.

Charles at just 28 years old was a clerk at the bank of England who had very good contacts. He used these contacts wisely to form the Birmingham and Midland Bank on Union Street in Birmingham and it was Chares great knowledge and skills of banking that got the newly established bank through the economic crisis in the 1840s and 1850s.

From this the bank grew. In 1851, the first large branch was opened as they purchased the ‘Stourbridge Old Bank’. In 1891 they then acquired their first London address by purchasing the ‘Central Bank of London Limited’ which was a major breakthrough for the company.

In 1907 the bank was one of the first to ever employ women in the bank, when they employed a woman named Anne Tulloch. As the first World War broke out in 1914, the bank lost a lot of male staff who went to fight, which ultimately resulted in even more women being employed.

In 1930, an architect named Sir Edwin Lutyens designed The Midlands Bank Group’s new headquarters which was a magnificent white building named ‘The Palace of Finance’ Things were looking up for the company as they were growing rapidly.

Midland Bank was the first bank in the United Kingdom to offer personal loans! It was in 1958 after the government lifted restrictions on lending that they gave out their first personal loan and within just 6 months had issued over 60,000 loans!

They were also the first British bank to give out cheque guarantee cards in 1966.

In 1992 The Midlands bank was bought by the HSBC Group, which was one of the largest banking merges of its time. It was then in 1999 that they finally became HSBC with the new branding.

    How the company works:

Applying for a loan with HSBC is easy. You are able to use their website to check the amount you wish to borrow and the term you would like to pay over.

You can then either apply by using their mobile banking app, filling out their online application form or booking an appointment and visiting one of the local branches.

After you have filled out all of the relevant information, you will receive your decision within minutes. If you are already a HSBC bank customer, you will also receive your fund the very same day or next working day.

If you are not a customer then it could take up to 5 days to receive a decision about your application and a further 3 days to receive the funds after you have been approved.

    Repayment method:

Repayment for your personal loan is done by direct debit on a date of your choosing.

Do I need a bank account?

Yes, you will need to hold a bank account to be able to apply.

To be eligible to apply for a loan you must fit the following criteria:

    Age

All applicants will need to be over 18 years of age.

    Address information

You will need to be a resident of the United Kingdom and also hold a UK address. If you are not an HSBC customer then you will be asked for your address history over the past 3 years so they can run the relevant credit checks.

    ID and Income

All applicants must be earning a minimum of £10,000 a year or more to be eligible to apply. This can either be from employment or a pension.

    Penalties

As with any loan company, if you miss payments then you will receive a missed payment penalty. You may also be charged for the bounced direct debit on your bank account.

If you continue to miss payments then your account may be referred to a debt collection agency who will attempt to recover the amount from you.

If you feel you can not make your loan repayments, it is always best to speak to them directly and inform them of your situation because they may be able to help you.

    Reviews

HSBC have mixed reviews on TrustPilot – some good and some very bad. Their overall star rating is 1.5 over 5 which is not really the best we have seen.

Their reviews, however, don’t necessarily complain about their loan service or anything, they are more complains about their online banking system.
